Who Are The Rattenne's?
And Why Should You Care?

The Rattenne family started as most families did, with a mother and a father. Just who the first mom and dad were in that long ago time is uncertain. In fact, current research only goes back to the mid-1800s, where  documentation exists to suggest that a Rattenne named Micke (Mickey?) was born in Italy (whereabouts unknown) in 1856 (to French parents?) and migrated to America in the late 1880s.

Micke married Emma Cabana, one of 12 children born to Jerome and Margaret Cabana, on June 26, 1883 (location unknown but likely to have been Sioux City, IA). Seven years later, on March 19, 1890, he became a U.S. citizen in Woodbury County IA.

Micke died on May 1, 1928 at the age of 72, and is buried in Logan Park, Sioux City, Iowa.

Michael II
Micke and Emma gave birth to Michael Leo Rattenne on August 24, 1898. Young Mike spent most of his life in the Sioux City area and eventually went to work for the Chicago Great Western Railroad (later the Chicago & North Western), holding a position in the Sioux City roundhouse.

He married Hazel Eugenia Lanphere on October 2, 1921, and the two conceived their first son, Donald Clair, a little more than three months into the marriage.

The Kids
Donald was born October 21, 1922, and Mike and Hazel subsequently gave birth to four more children: Jean, Michael Leo III, Geraldine, and James.

The five children were reduced to four when young Jean died tragically at the young age of 16 from a brain tumor.

Westward Ho! The Migration Begins
Don and Mike III were the first to leave home, migrating to Seattle Wash. in 1941, where their Uncle Paul took them in. Don got work as a rivet driver for Boeing Aircraft between July of '41 and July of '42 but both Don and Mike decided to sign on for service with the the Army Transport Service (precursor to today's MST)

World War II
Beginning in August of 1942 the brothers served their country as merchant seaman with Don working as an oiler/firemen ship engine rooms and Mike working as a radio operator (the two never did served on the same ship).

After the War Don began sailing out of San Francisco and in 1948 met and married his wife Jayne.

By the late 1950s Don, Jim and sister Jerry were all living in California. Jim settled in Los Angeles, Jerry in Orange County and Don in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The 1960s And Beyond
In the early 1960s Mike II and Hazel decided to leave Sioux City and move to Southern California where they could be closer to their grown children nd grandchildren. They setted in North Hollywood.

Between 1961 and 1968 Jim fathered four daughters and sister Jerry became mother to a daughter and son. Don was also building his family and by 1959 had two sons and a daughter.

During the 1980s Jim went through a painful divorce, leaving LA for the Rocky Mountains and a new life in Denver.

Mike III played the rogue and returned to the Midwest, settling in Kansas.

The Family Shrinks
In 1968 Mike II was struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing a street. He died several days later from an undiagnosed perforated ulcer. Two years later, on July 30, 1970,  daughter Jerry was killed in an auto accident in Orange County, leaving two children and a husband behind.

"Mom" Hazel continued to live in North Hollywood until the late 1970s when Don moved her to San Jose so he could better look after her. She died on December 29, 1982 from a heart attack at the age of 81.

Next to pass on was oldest brother Don, who died on March 3, 1996 at age 73 from a case of undiagnosed mesothelioma.

Five and a half years later, on February 25, 2001, youngest brother Jim passed away in Colorado Springs at age 68.

As of September 2006, only Michael Leo III survives.

Fourth and Fifth Generation Rattennes
Responsibility for carrying on the family name has fallen to Michael IV of the Kansas clan who has three sons, and Kirk of the California clan with one son.

Thanks to Michael IV, the name Michael Rattenne will carry on with son Michael V.
