Somethings
never change, especially when photographing Amtrak. Above, on November
28, 1988 Union Pacific 3632 leads a near on-time Amtrak No. 5 through Blue
Canyon during a late Fall snow flurry. Tucked in behind the off-line diesel
are a pair of Amtrak's ubiquituous F40PH units, the standard power for
the passenger carrier's long and short distance trains through the 1990s.
The UP SD40-2 was most likely added to the consist in Ogden.
Right, fast forward to February 5, 2005. No.
5 is tardy - over five hours so - as it accelerates away from the Truckee
depot with yet another Union Pacific unit to assist the run over Donner
Pass. This time, however, UP is now the owner of the Donner Pass route
and Amtrak's F40PHs have given way to a pair of gurgling General Electric
P42s.
