16. John⁴ McGlauflin (James³ MacLachlan, James², John¹) was born in Charlestown, Sullivan, NH 11 October 1798. John died 6 December 1850 in Charlotte, Washington, ME, at 52 years of age.

He married Hannah Smith 1819 in Charlotte, Washington, ME. Hannah was born 11 February 1805 in Charlotte, Washington, ME. She was the daughter of Hosea Smith Sr. and Abigail Hersey. Hannah died 5 January 1880 in Charlotte, Washington, ME, at 74 years of age. John followed his older brother, William, to Charlotte in 1818. Seven of his sons fought in the Civil War. John died young at 52, thirty years before his wife. He was a farmer, a Whig, and a Baptist. A farmer all his life, he built his home on Smith's Ridge. An early history reports that John was "of strong character, great energy, wide and varied activities; engaged in lumbering and milling, redeemed a large farm from the forest, improved it so that for many years it was judged by the agricultural society as the best in that quarter of the state. He taught school at times and was at different periods a town accountant and state official."

John McGlauflin and Hannah Smith had the following children:

• + 43 vii. James McGlauflin was born 13 March 1829.

• + 44 viii. Josiah McGlauflin was born 20 August 1830.

• 45 ix. Polly McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 23 May 1832.

• 46 x. Sally McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 14 October 1833.

• 47 xi. Isaac McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 20 June 1835.

• 48 xii. Nancy McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 30 January 1837.

• 49 xiii. Ezra McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 11 December 1838. He married Melissa Ann Sprague 18 August 1861 in Charlotte, Washington, ME. Melissa was born about 1840.

• 50 xiv. Hellen McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 11 January 1841.

• 51 xv. Hannah McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 10 June 1842.

• 52 xvi. Alvira McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 29 October 1842.

• 53 xvii. Laura McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 30 December 1844.

• 54 xviii. Willis G. McGlauflin was born in Charlotte, Washington, ME 16 April 1849.
