He married Ellen Idden 28 April 1886. Ellen was born 14 December 1856. Ellen was the daughter of Edward Idden. Ellen died 22 January 1893 at 36 years of age.

John George Openshaw and Ellen Idden had the following children:

204 i. John Edward¹⁸ Openshaw was born 8 February 1887.

205 ii. Mary Adelaide Openshaw was born 17 June 1890.
